Before Your First Sip
When you first receive your AM Stores bottle, it will be at its brightest. Before you start using it, we recommend a simple ritual to prepare the metal.
Rinse the inside with warm water and a drop of mild liquid soap. Shake it well, then rinse again. Avoid using anything abrasive on the exterior to preserve the artisan polish.
The Golden Rules
Maintaining copper isn't complicated, but it does require following a few essential rules to ensure the water quality remains optimal.
- Room Temperature Only: Copper is a great conductor. Hot water can make the bottle dangerous to hold and may affect the metal's properties.
- Still Water Only: Never use copper for carbonated drinks, juices, or milk. The acidity can cause a reaction with the metal.
- No Dishwashers: The high heat and harsh chemicals will strip the copper of its natural finish and health benefits.
The Natural Clean
Over time, copper naturally darkens. This isn't dirt—it's oxidation. To restore that original glow, skip the chemical cleaners and look in your kitchen instead.
01The Lemon & Salt Method
Squeeze half a lemon into the bottle and add a tablespoon of salt. Add a cup of warm water, put the lid on, and shake vigorously for 2 minutes.
02Rinse & Dry
Pour out the mixture and rinse the interior thoroughly with plain water. This is the most important part: dry the exterior immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
Pro Tip: If you don't have lemons, white vinegar works just as well. Use a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and water with a spoonful of salt.
What is Patina?
As you use your bottle, you might notice small dark spots or a change in color. This is called a 'patina'. In many cultures, this aging process is celebrated—it shows the metal is pure and untreated.
We do not use any artificial coatings or lacquers on the inside of our bottles. This means the copper is free to interact with the water, which is where the health benefits come from. If you prefer the shiny look, simply follow the "Natural Clean" method once a week.
Storing Your Vessel
If you aren't planning to use your bottle for a few days, make sure it is completely dry before putting the cap on. Storing it with moisture trapped inside can lead to excessive oxidation.
Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its structural integrity and finish.
